BEST FOR ISLAND HOPPING
Korcula, Croatia
The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure chest of islands - there are more than a thousand of them. Ferries run from Dubrovnik and Split to hot spots including the party island of Hvar, or you can hire a yacht and seek out secret coves.
The island of Korcula, 160 km from Dubrovnik, is the latest 'in' place to stay. Sailing into the marina along the Peljesac channel is a trip back in time: there are fairy-tale Venetian buildings, vintage fishing boats, fortress walls, ancient churches and winding alleyways.
The Lešić Dimitri Palace is a luxury retreat in the island's old town, set in an 18th-century palace and five medieval cottages. Inspired by Korcula's connection with Marco Polo, who is thought to have lived on the island, it has six suites, each one inspired by a destination from the explorer's 13th-century travels on the Silk Road. The hotel offers visits to the museums of the old town, and cycling tours through the island's vineyards. But the best exploring is to be done on one of the hotel's private yachts....
