Korcula: 'The Star-studded Isle"

The Star-studded Isle
Stars such as Steven Spielberg, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna have set sail to the low-key island of Korčula, near Splut and Dubrovnik on Croatia's coast.
Korčula is tranquil and undisturbed, the suncream-advert-blue sea passes teh "Can you see the bottom?" test, the beaches are pristine, the bays often fabulously empty and stunning architecture displays the country's Roman and Venetian roots. Even the leaves fall from the trees in neat little piles - it's fairy-tale pretty.
Check in to the Lešić Dimitri Palace, a few cobbled streets from the sea. This restored 18th-century bishop's palace is now a spectacular hotel and one of the most stylish places to stay in the world.
The largest residence, Korčula, mixes ultra-modern furniture with the original limestone walls. The Venice apartment looks liks a brand-new Venetian palazzo and the romantic, two-person rooftop Arabia boasts 360-degree views.
Make sure you book a fantastic Thai massage at the spa or sail its pretty wooden yacht round the local islets. Beyond, explore the town's historic churches, cathedral and museums, leaving plenty of time for refreshment over the local wines.
Don't hold back on the food: local dishes include marinated octopus, rolled-macaroni with beef sauce, fried squid, home-cures prosciutto and almonds crusted with whiet sugar. Everything is naturally organic, delicious and good for you. Rather like Korcula itself. by Kate O'Donnell.
